The results of two major studies, the Diabetes Complications and Control Trial (DCCT) and the UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS), showed that tighter blood glucose control achieved through intensive insulin therapy (either via continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (
CSII) or multiple daily injections) significantly reduces the onset and progression of various long-term complications of Type 1 diabetes. Subsequent studies have shown the advantage of
CSII therapy over multiple daily injections including a reduction in hypoglycemic events, reduced glycemic variability, and improved quality of life. In spite of these results, the utilization of
CSII therapy among diabetes patients is still limited, largely as a result of complicated, costly, and inconvenient conventional insulin pump technology.
Insulet Corporation’s first commercial product, the OmniPod Insulin Management System, has been specifically designed to break down the barriers to
CSII therapy, improve health outcomes, and make diabetes a smaller part of life for diabetes patients. Developed under the guidance of a highly-respected team of scientific advisors, this revolutionary new insulin infusion system brings together all of the functionality of a conventional insulin pump and blood glucose monitor into an easy to use, two-part system that features no tubing and automated cannula insertion. The OmniPod Insulin Management System received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in January 2005, and is currently available in the
United States.
